College Fair Exposes New MGP Class to Institutions

Saturday’s Midnight Golf Program College Fair, held at Quicken Loans’ Headquarters in Downtown Detroit, kicked off our first college fair of the season with over 150 students – our highest participation ever! Representatives from 42 colleges and universities from around the country made their pitches as to why their institution is the right fit for our talented young people. For many of these students, this was their first college fair and an exciting opportunity to see what higher education options are available to them. The goal of the event was to encourage MGP students to learn about the participating institutions, understand the application process (many students even were able to submit applications AND GAIN ACCEPTANCE on the spot), and gain access to exclusive scholarship and financial aid opportunities necessary to make their dreams a reality.

“The purpose for us overall is exposure,” said Winston Coffee, MGP College Success Coach & College Liaison. “We want to get our young people comfortable with communicating with college reps face-to-face. Having the ability to learn about these institutions in real time and apply, and be accepted on the spot, is very important to our students.”

Participating institutions were those with whom MGP has relationships and partnerships and included Michigan State University, Benedict College, Harris-Stowe State University, Claffin University, and Norfolk State University. New partnerships also included Chicago State University and Wittenberg University. Notably out-of-state schools, including Iowa State University and Northern Illinois University, also attended.

MGP’s College Success Coaches will continue to work with this year’s high school students on finding their best college fit throughout the year. The next college fair will take place this spring.
